Is Dundee Airport closing?

Loganair has confirmed that its Dundee operating base will close and its scheduled passenger flights will end after Friday 23rd October 2026. This does not itself establish that Dundee Airport will permanently close. In a parliamentary answer on 3rd September 2026, the Scottish Government said it continued to subsidise the airport’s ongoing operation. A motion lodged on 9th October called for further assurances and action; it was not a formal closure decision. The airport’s longer-term operating arrangements remain uncertain in the sources checked for this article.

When do Dundee Airport flights stop?

Loganair has confirmed that its Dundee flights will end after Friday 23rd October 2026, when its Dundee operating base closes. The withdrawal includes the London Heathrow route and the links to Kirkwall and Sumburgh.

The final date was moved from an earlier planned September end date. The 23rd October date is recorded in the Scottish Parliament motion lodged on 9th October 2026.

Which flights from Dundee Airport are affected?

Dundee to London Heathrow

The publicly supported Dundee–Heathrow route, operating since 2014, will end on Friday 23rd October 2026.

The Dundee to Kirkwall route will end on Friday 23rd October 2026.

Dundee to Sumburgh, Shetland

Is there a replacement airline for Dundee Airport?

Dundee City Council is the lead body developing proposals for a new publicly supported Dundee–London service. The Scottish Government told Parliament on 3rd September 2026 that it would consider a funding request from the council. If the council and governments decide to fund a replacement route, an airline would be chosen through a competitive bidding process. This is still a proposal, not confirmation that funding has been approved or that replacement flights are available to book.

Confirmed

Loganair’s scheduled Dundee flights to London Heathrow, Kirkwall and Sumburgh will end on Friday 23rd October 2026.

Why is Loganair leaving Dundee Airport?

Loganair said the Dundee–Heathrow contract had become financially unsustainable and that it had explored alternatives but could not find a viable way to continue the route. The route received public funding to help keep the air link running.

A Scottish Parliament motion lodged on 9th October 2026 called for urgent work to secure a replacement carrier and asked the Scottish Government to publish its assessment of why the route became unsustainable, including any effect of competition from Edinburgh Airport. These are calls for action and further explanation, not findings that have been established by the motion itself. The sources reviewed for this article do not provide a full breakdown of route revenue, operating costs or the reasons behind Loganair’s commercial assessment.

What happens to existing Loganair bookings from Dundee?

Loganair has said it will contact customers affected by the withdrawal. Check your inbox and junk folder, keep your booking reference, and make sure the airline or booking agent has your current contact details. If you booked through a travel agent or another website, contact that seller if you need help with the booking.

If your booked flight is cancelled, check the refund and rerouting choices before accepting a refund if you still need to travel. A refund or rerouting is separate from any fixed compensation, which depends on the circumstances and notice given. The passenger-rights section below explains the distinction; the Civil Aviation Authority’s guidance is in the official links panel at the end.

How can I get from Dundee to London now?

Compare your London travel options

Flights from another airport

Search by London airport, not just “London”. Services may arrive at Heathrow, Gatwick or Luton, and travelling between those airports or into central London adds time and cost. Check fares and times for your date, including the journey from Dundee to the departure airport.

Train from Dundee

Use the ScotRail journey planner to compare Dundee–London services, fares, journey times and any changes required. Check engineering work and live updates for your date.

Compare the full journey

Include onward transport to your destination in London. A flight fare alone does not show the total cost or door-to-door travel time. Prices and journey times vary by date.

How will people travel to Orkney and Shetland?

Travelling to Orkney

With the Dundee–Kirkwall flight ending, there are two main alternatives to compare. The best choice depends on your date, final destination in Orkney and whether you are taking a vehicle.

Fly to Kirkwall

Glasgow has Loganair flights to Kirkwall on selected dates, but the service is not daily. Check the exact date and arrival time before planning connections.

Take a ferry

NorthLink Ferries sails from Scrabster to Stromness and from Aberdeen to Kirkwall on selected days. Pentland Ferries sails from Gills Bay to St Margaret’s Hope.

When comparing: allow for travel from Dundee to the airport or ferry terminal, ticket costs, vehicle bookings, arrival times and onward transport in Orkney. Ferry ports and timetables differ, so choose the route that fits your destination and travel date.

Travelling to Shetland

After the Dundee–Sumburgh service ends, travellers can compare flights from other Scottish airports with the ferry from Aberdeen. Flight routes and frequencies vary by season and date, so confirm the exact itinerary before booking.

Fly to Sumburgh

Loganair lists services from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness, as well as connections via Kirkwall. Routes and frequencies vary, so confirm the service on your travel date.

Take the ferry

NorthLink Ferries operates an overnight ferry from Aberdeen to Lerwick. Some sailings also call at Kirkwall, so check the timetable and sailing details for your date.

When comparing: include travel to Aberdeen or another departure airport, total journey time, the cost of a cabin if needed, connections and onward transport in Shetland.

Confirm any flight option with the airline for your exact travel date, as routes and frequencies can change.

What does this mean for Dundee and the surrounding area?

For residents and businesses that relied on these routes, trips to London, Orkney or Shetland may now require a journey to another airport, a connecting flight or a ferry. Depending on the timetable and connection, this can add ground-transport costs, travel time or an overnight stay.

A motion put forward in the Scottish Parliament says around 16 Loganair jobs are at risk and raises concerns about other airport jobs too. Loganair says it will support its Dundee staff and look for other roles for them where possible. The final effect on jobs and the airport is not yet clear.

What should passengers do next?

  • If you already have a booking: check your email and junk folder, keep your booking reference, and contact Loganair or your booking agent if you have not received instructions.
  • For London: compare flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen with the train from Dundee. Check which London airport you would arrive at and include all ground transport costs.
  • For Orkney: check Glasgow–Kirkwall flights on your exact date, or compare NorthLink’s Scrabster–Stromness and Aberdeen–Kirkwall sailings with Pentland Ferries from Gills Bay.
  • For Shetland: compare flights to Sumburgh from other Scottish airports with NorthLink’s overnight Aberdeen–Lerwick ferry. Check connections, cabin needs and onward travel.
  • Before booking: verify the complete itinerary with the airline, rail or ferry operator. As of 19th October 2026, a replacement Dundee–London service had not been announced as available to book.

Passenger rights if your flight is cancelled

Can I get a refund for a cancelled Loganair flight?

If Loganair cancels a flight you have booked from Dundee, UK passenger-rights rules generally apply because the flight departs from a UK airport.

You can choose a refund for the unused part of your ticket, rerouting to your destination at the earliest opportunity, or rerouting on a later date that suits you, subject to availability. Rerouting may involve an indirect service, another airport or other suitable transport, so ask Loganair to explain the options for your booking.

If you still need to travel, consider rerouting before accepting a refund: once you choose a refund, you normally give up the right to rerouting and care for that booking.

Fixed compensation is separate from a refund or rerouting and depends on the notice given, the timing of any alternative flight and the reason for cancellation; it is not normally due when you are told at least 14 days before departure.

Read the Civil Aviation Authority’s cancelled-flight guidance and check the options offered for your specific booking.
