BT Takes Over TalkTalk: What Happens to Your Broadband?
BT has taken over TalkTalk’s consumer and wholesale businesses after acquiring them out of administration, but TalkTalk customers do not need to take immediate action.
The deal affects around 2.5 million customers across the UK, including about 1.5 million retail customers and 1 million wholesale customers. BT says the acquisition is intended to protect continuity of broadband and phone services, including services relied on by vulnerable households and critical public services.

What does BT taking over TalkTalk mean for customers?
For most TalkTalk customers, the important point is that your broadband or phone service should continue as normal for now.
BT has stepped in after TalkTalk’s consumer and wholesale businesses entered administration. The acquisition is designed to prevent a sudden loss of service while the business is stabilised and the longer-term position is worked through.
The government has also intervened because of concerns about the potential impact of a TalkTalk collapse on vulnerable customers, public services and critical infrastructure. It says TalkTalk customers do not need to take any action and will be contacted directly if there are changes they need to know about.
Do TalkTalk customers need to do anything?
No, not at the moment.
The government has specifically said TalkTalk customers do not need to take any action. You should continue using your existing broadband or phone service as normal.
You do not need to sign up for a new BT service simply because BT has acquired the TalkTalk businesses.
If you normally pay TalkTalk by Direct Debit, there is no reason to cancel it simply because of today’s announcement. Wait for any official communication about changes to billing or payment arrangements.
Will my TalkTalk broadband stop working?
There is no indication that TalkTalk customers should expect their broadband to stop working because of the takeover.
Continuity of service is one of the main reasons BT has stepped in. BT says the acquisition is intended to protect service continuity for around 2.5 million customers.
The government has said services should continue as normal while the acquisition process is taken forward.
Do I need to switch from TalkTalk to BT?
No.
BT’s acquisition does not mean that TalkTalk customers have been told to take out a new BT broadband contract.
For now, keep using your existing service and wait for any direct communication from TalkTalk or BT about changes that affect you.

Will my TalkTalk broadband price change?
No. BT says there will be no change to customers’ price, contract or billing as a result of the acquisition.
That does not mean prices can never change in future. It simply means customers should not assume that their current price has changed because BT has acquired the business.
If there are future changes to prices, contracts or other customer terms, customers should receive information about those changes directly.
Will my TalkTalk contract change?
There has been no announcement today telling TalkTalk customers that they must sign a new contract.
The immediate priority is keeping services running while the acquired businesses are stabilised. If your contractual arrangements or terms need to change later, you should be given information about what is changing and what it means for you.
For now, keep your existing contract and account information. There is no need to switch provider simply because of the takeover.
What happens to TalkTalk accounts and billing?
There are no immediate account changes that customers have been told to make.
Keep using your existing TalkTalk account and follow your normal payment arrangements unless you receive official instructions saying otherwise.
Be particularly careful with unexpected emails or messages asking you to enter payment details, change your Direct Debit or log in through a new link. A major company takeover can create opportunities for scammers to impersonate businesses.
Why is the government involved?
This is more than an ordinary business takeover because TalkTalk provides services used by millions of people and its networks support organisations and critical services.
On 5th October 2026, the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport issued a Public Interest Intervention Notice under the Enterprise Act 2002. The government said it was concerned that a collapse of TalkTalk could cause sudden disruption to telecommunications services, with potential consequences for vulnerable customers, public services and critical infrastructure.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has been asked to report back to the Secretary of State by 19th October 2026. The government will then consider the wider public interest issues alongside the competition assessment.
This means the wider regulatory process is still ongoing, even though BT has acquired the businesses out of administration.
What happens next?
The immediate focus is on maintaining services and stabilising the acquired businesses.
There is also a regulatory process taking place. The CMA has been asked to assess competition issues and report by 19th October, while the Secretary of State will consider the wider public interest issues covered by the intervention notice.
For customers, the key point is that you do not need to make a decision today. If the arrangements for your service, account, contract or billing change, you should be contacted directly.
